Day-by-Day Itinerary: Marangu 5 Days
Day 0: Arrival
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our ground handling team. After introductions, you’ll be transferred to your charming accommodation in Arusha or Moshi for an evening of rest and relaxation.
Day 1: Transfer to Marangu Gate + Trek to Mandara Huts
Start the day early with a hearty breakfast. After a briefing, you’ll take a transfer vehicle for the approximately four-hour journey to the hike’s starting point. Following entrance formalities at the National Park gate (1,830 m), we’ll ascend through enchanting forest to Mandara Huts (2,700 m). Nearby, Maundi Crater offers a chance for an afternoon excursion. Overnight at Mandara Hut. (Walking time: 3-5 hours)
Day 2: Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts
Begin with a steep ascent through forest that opens into grassy moorland, with possible views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks in clear weather. We’ll climb steadily through moorland with giant heather and groundsel stands until reaching Horombo Huts (3,720 m), where breathtaking sunrises and sunsets await. Overnight at Horombo Hut. (Walking time: 4-6 hours)
Day 3: Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts
We continue with a gradual ascent toward the lunar desert of the Saddle, between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain shifts to scree, enhancing the feeling of high-altitude wilderness. Arriving at Kibo Hut (4,700 m) by midday, you’ll have the afternoon to rest before dinner and an early night in preparation for the summit. (Walking time: 4-6 hours)
Day 4: Uhuru Peak Summit + Descent to Horombo Huts
Around 1 a.m., we’ll begin our ascent by torchlight, aiming to reach Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The climb is steep, traversing loose volcanic scree, but with well-graded zig-zags. We’ll reach Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) in about five to six hours, resting to marvel at the sunrise. Those feeling up to it can take a three-hour round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m). The descent back to Horombo Hut is swift. (Walking time: 11-15 hours)
Day 5: Descent from Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate + Transfer Back to Hotel
Our final day involves a descent through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700 m), and then a journey through lush forest along a well-maintained path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m). (Walking time: 5-6 hours) A vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
